Development of language is followed from the first cries in the delivery room through to the fluent speech of a seven year old. Theories outlined include the Nature-Nature debate, the Whorf-Sapir Hypothesis and the question of whether non human animals use language. The main emphasis in this programme is practical and developmental stages are illustrated by a variety of children
