SAGE Business Cases
Summary Densely populated city centers often suffer from traffic problems. A popular measure to tackle these problems is to impose so-called city logistics programs. In these programs, center-bound goods from different freight forwarders are consolidated outside of the city center and delivered through a dedicated logistics service provider. This case discusses the operational challenges of city logistics projects in a realistic setting. The decision maker is senior mayor Franz Bachmeier of the midsize German town of Donaukirchen. Together with his coalition partners he needs to evaluate whether a city logistics program is the right choice for Donaukirchen. As in many political situations, Bachmeier is not only confronted with the specific local circumstances of the Donaukirchen city center, but also with a hairy mix of arguments from his coalition partners
