Summary Finding a way to replicate the human heart is the holy grail of modern medicine, and Dr Kevin Fong wants to find out how close we are to achieving it. This program follows Dr Fong as he meets some of the people who have undergone pioneering heart operations and the scientists who are pushing the limits of cardiac treatment.Dr Fong starts his search for a new heart by meeting a man called Max. This 27 year old Londoner was born with a congenital heart defect, resulting in a transplant three months ago. But while his new heart has changed his life for the better, the tragedy for Max is that his heart will probably only last 15 years. In Oklahoma, Dr Fong meets patient Troy Golden and his heart surgeon Dr Jim Long. Troy has been fitted with a Syncardia total artificial heart. It's keeping him alive but only until a donor heart becomes available.Dr Fong then meets Dr John Elefteriades who believes that we should be looking at a way to enhance the function of our own hearts, rather than replace them. Meanwhile, in her lab in Minnesota, Doris Taylor is a woman who thinks that stem cells may be the answer. Finally Dr Fong visits Guys and St Thomas' hospital in London where he meets Dr Nic Smith and Dr Reza Rezavi. They have created a 'virtual heart' using data collected directly from individual patients which can be used for experimentation. (From the UK) (Documentary) PG CC
