Summary "Derek Jarman's most profound reflection on art, sexuality and identity retells the life of the celebrated 17th-century painter through his brilliant, nearly blasphemous paintings and his flirtations with the underworld. CARAVAGGIO incorporates the painter's precise aesthetic into the movie's own visuals, while touching on all of Jarman's major concerns: history, homosexuality, violence and the relationship between painting and film"-- Kanopy
Derek Jarman struggled for seven years to bring his portrait of the 17th century Italian artist Michelangelo da Caravaggio to the screen. The result was well worth the wait. It's a freely dramatised portrait which conjures several of the controversial artist's most famous paintings through elaborate and beautifully photographed tableaux vivants, and boasts wonderful performances from Nigel Terry, Sean Bean, and, in her first role, Tilda Swinton. Winner of a Silver Berlin Bear award at the **Berlin International Film Festival**. Official Selection at the **Toronto International Film Festival**. *"...visually beautiful, sly and idiosyncratic biographical portrait of the great 17th-century Italian artist is an enduring delight" - Glenn Kenny, **The New York Times***
