Fenella Kernebone walks the forgotten streets of Sydney to view an exciting new laneway art project; Scott Rankin's tribute to the extraordinary life of Albert Namatjira; and meet Melbourne artist Emma van Leest. This week on Art Nation Fenella Kernebone is off to see Sydney's back streets being made over by nine of Australia's most respected contemporary artists in an exciting new laneway art project Are You Looking At Me? Using light projection, sound, text and imagery these artists have used their installations to create an outdoor gallery experience to breathe new life into these forgotten spaces.Art Nation also checks out Belvoir Street Theatre's tribute to the great Australian Indigenous artist, Albert Namatjira. Namatjira is written and co-directed by Big hART's Scott Rankin. Half a century after Namatjira's death, Belvoir Street and Big hART have invited some of his descendants - third generation watercolour artists - to spend six weeks filling the Belvoir St corner with a huge drawing of Namatjira's country. Each night as they draw, Trevor Jamieson will retell Namatjira's extraordinary life. And finally, Art Nation previews the intricate works of Melbourne artist Emma van Leest. Van Leest's mind-boggling paper cutting skills have their roots in women's handicraft traditions and her art draws on religious, oriental, folk art, fairytale and Hindu literature themes |
