Summary "Some parents are perplexed and occasionally troubled by their children's overly aggressive behavior. Others are perturbed because their children do not appear to be aggressive enough, even under circumstances that would warrant such behavior. Whether it be one of these extremes or not, all parents seem to have these questions in common: "Where do aggressive impulses come from?" "Is aggressive behavior in children normal?" "If it is, how much and what kind is desirable?" These queries are invariably followed by the crucial one, namely: "As parents, what can we do to help our children direct their aggressiveness into constructive channels so that, as adults, they will be better able to face themselves and their contemporaries with confidence rather than fear, and to act with tolerance and understanding rather than with prejudice or blind violence?" The idea, then, for this pamphlet grew out of the oft-repeated questions raised by parents in our varied and direct contacts with them. The material was gathered over a period of years and prepared for presentation by Mrs. Edith Lesser Atkin, in conjunction with the staff of the Child Study Association. It has been our intention here, through a review of familiar concepts of child development and management, to show the effects of the interplay between the child's fundamental and primitive needs on the one hand, and the counterforces that are necessarily and inevitably imposed on him. From the very beginning, the stage is set either for struggle or healthy negotiation and compromise. It is possible, though not always simple, to avoid the pitfalls in this unceasing drama. With this conviction, AGGRESSIVENESS IN CHILDREN was written for parents and others who live and work with children. It is our sincere hope that it may serve as a guide toward the more constructive use of aggressive feelings as a most valuable source of human energy"--Introduction.
