Summary "Since Professors Keller and Schoenfeld first reported their success at Columbia University in teaching the principles of operant conditioning to elementary laboratory students by requiring them to condition their own animals, interest in this kind of course has been growing. We believe this can be accounted for by the enthusiastic reception given such a course by students. At any rate, since we instituted the course outlined in this manual at the University of Pittsburgh, we received an increasing number of requests for information concerning it. This, it appeared, was due to the fact that, although operant conditioning principles are taught in laboratory courses at a number of colleges and universities, no convenient source of instructions concerning procedures and apparatus was available. It was this need which the present manual was designed to fulfill. We have intended it to be useful in either an elementary laboratory course or in a first course in learning. In the notes to instructors and laboratory assistants, we include some animal-care procedures we have found expeditious, and describe the apparatus needed for the course. The studies themselves are numerous enough to occupy an entire semester of weekly two-hour laboratory periods. However, if he so desires, the instructor may use selected studies to occupy a portion of the semester, and devote the remainder to experimental design and individual or group projects. To serve this purpose, we have provided sections on the conditioning of humans, and on the design and reporting of experiments which we have found helpful in our teaching"--Preface.
