Summary This volume is concerned with the process of deconstructing self-sufficient "Anglo-Australian" national identity, and sheds light on the intense and sustained efforts of Australian writers to contribute to the country's self-definition as a post-colonial and multi-cultural society against the traditional predominance of a "white" British culture that aims at cultural homogeneity. Another focus of the book is on the unique experience of Australian landscape and nature, which has been a major subject of Australian writing since the 19th century, and as a theme has never lost its topicality. --book cover
