The Australian Heritage Commission, in association with the Institution of Engineers, Australia, initiated research in 1980 into Australian historic bridges. This booklet is one outcome. The booklet has two objectives, to provide an introduction to the history of bridges in Australia, and to assist readers to recognise bridges of interest and to report their findings. Afer an introductory look at some old bridges, it classifies bridges into their various types and illustrates particular features of these types by reference to Australian bridges.
