Description 1 online resource (12 minutes)
Summary THE MECHANIZED EYE is part of the film retrospective UNSEEN CINEMA that explores long-forgotten American experimental cinema. Early film experiments by Jerome Hill shot with an amateur 16mm Kodak "Ciné Special" camera at his summer home in Cassis, France and incorporating shots of the Mediterranean Sea. --BRUCE POSNER. Using ideas about the transformation of the self that C. G. Jung found in alchemical texts, the film depicts the role "solutio" and "coniunctio" play in the process of individuation. The special effects, created mostly in-camera, have alchemical meanings (e.g., the union of fire and water). --R. BRUCE ELDER. Jerome Hill, the son of a railroad magnate, grew up under the gaze of professional cinematographers. He began making films at Yale and documented on film Grandma Moses and Albert Schweitzer. Hill completed the sophisticated autobiographical "Film Portrait" (1972), which looks back on the history of cinema as well as his own life. He was one of the founders of Anthology Film Archives. -ROBERT A. HALLER Alternate title: "La Cartomancienne". 35mm 1.33:1 black and white color tints sound 11:42 minutes.
