"Probably nowhere in psychology has a greater diversity of thought, of philosophy and of method been expressed and been revised under the impact of new evidence than the realm of personality and personality theory. Whole schools have been started and flourished, waned and flowered again, around such theories as those expounded by Freud, Adler, Lewin, Watson, Allport, Murray, Kelly and Rogers. Exponents of each school in its modern dress are represented here. Underlying many of the theories presented are some of the basic processes in personality development and expression, such as learning and perception as well as genetics and the effects of early experience. The book presents these fundamentals as the necessary foundation for the study of man. Contemporary psychology also takes full cognizance of the emergence and behavior of the individual deriving from his membership in various social groups. To encompass this area, the book includes a section on social process and personality, including the cultural, anthropological and sociological climate in which the individual behaves. Finally, the book recognizes the extensive role of research in personality by presenting viewpoints on assessment--vital to an objective evaluation of the individual. Personality theory is living, dynamic, and in a constant state of flux. It has reached no level of final solution. It grows and changes. It is alive, and the psychologist must ever be aware of the changes occurring in it. The present volume is in fact intended for that purpose."
