Summary The 1984 documentary video title says it all in this vital club-setting performance by the dynamic Willie Dixon, the most influential songwriter/vocalist/upright bassist to shape the modern blues in the late 40s and 50s in Chicago. He's also the pioneer songwriter whose spirited deep-blues tunes like "Red Rooster," "I'm Your Hoochie Coochie Man" and "Spoonful" became big hits for bands like the Rolling Stones, Yardbirds and Eric Clapton. As such he has been recognized as the key crossover musician who changed the style of the blues to help give birth to modern rock in the '60s. In this show, the tall, husky man in a pink blazer mesmerizes the crowd with such catchy songs as "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and the rocking blues ride on his "Wang Dang Doodle" that ends the festive set. Throughout the show Dixon espouses the importance of the blues by telling the crowd his messages: "The blues are the true facts of life," "the blues are my heritage ... and the roots of all American music," and "it takes the blues to bring out the truth." The video intersperses entertaining live performances of Dixon's plugged-in band with snippets of an interview with him where he promotes the blues with tales of his life launching his music. By the end of the video, you are most certainly convinced that Willie Dixon is the blues man of his day who taught legends like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf the new blues path. Dan Ouellette
