The first sample of the fine white earth “Sydneia” was collected by Governor Phillip from the shores of Sydney Cover, who also provided samples to Sir Joseph Banks. Hatchett and Josiah Wedgwood both in turn received samples from Banks, resulting in this scientific review and the 1789 Sydney Cove Medallion. Frederick Rathbone wrote an article on Josiah Wedgwood's experiences with the clay entitled: Josiah Wedgwood on the clay of Sydney Cove |
