Summary The suppression of the Chinese student demonstrations in Tianamen Square on 4 June 1989 was the tragic culmination to the protests and hunger strikes of the previous two months. Rooted in a growing sense of dislocation and dissatisfaction within Chinese society, the protest movement also reflected the particular disaffection of the academic and student community. As a lecturer at a Shanghai university during the 1988-89 academic year, Dr Grant was in the position to observe the many problems which triggered this student activism and resolve: the students' frustration at their limited professional opportunities in a corrupt society; their primitive accommodation; and their struggle to survive financially. Her account of tertiary education in Shanghai will challenge those who associate Chinese civilisation with respect for teachers and learning
