Summary As US troops claim they're winning over people in Afghanistan, Dateline goes out on the streets of Kandahar and finds that not all locals are so convinced; Thousands of refugees are escaping Iran and Afghanistan for Greece, but in the economic crisis, all they're finding is more misery and meet the Italian prisoners cooking up a behind bars banquet with an acclaimed chef, booking out their jail restaurant months in advance.THE TALIBAN STRIKES BACKThe streets of Kandahar, the Taliban's birthplace in Afghanistan, were once a no-go zone for outsiders, but US troops stationed there believe they're winning over the locals and helping bring peace to the area.On Sunday's Dateline, reporter John D McHugh from Al Jazeera is embedded with the US 4th Infantry Division as they patrol the area. But although all seems quiet while he's on the streets, John still finds fear of suicide bombings, and worries among local people that they're unwillingly caught between the two sides... a concern highlighted by the death of Kandahar's mayor in a Taliban attack shortly after filming finished.John is also there as news comes through that Osama Bin Laden has been killed in neighbouring Pakistan and he captures the frank reaction from the US troops. But as the US commits to begin withdrawing soldiers from Afghanistan, is this really the 'endgame' for their military presence?NO REFUGEFor the hundreds of thousands of refugees streaming into Greece, reaching Europe means a chance of a better life away from the violence and persecution in Afghanistan and Iran. But for many, the reality is more misery... in a country without enough money and jobs for its own citizens, the new arrivals are facing increasingly violent animosity and a desperate battle to survive.Video journalist Aaron Lewis reports from the Turkish border, which has become the back door into Europe, as asylum seekers arrive after treacherous journeys to be housed in filthy detention centres. Then he follows some of them to Athens, where they're left to fend for themselves amid the economic crisis... unwelcome anywhere in Europe or back in their own countries.MISCREANT MASTERCHEFPrison food is something that most of us would happily live without trying, but in the culinary heartland of Italy, a restaurant at a Tuscan jail is booked out months in advance.Behind the maximum security walls, video journalist Amos Roberts finds acclaimed chef Christiano Tomei working with the prisoners to prepare a seven course banquet. It's because this prison in Volterra has pioneered a kind of culinary rehabilitation of inmates and regularly invites locals in to sample their cuisine. As murderers mingle with masterchefs at this picturesque 15th century fortress, the prison director underlines the importance of maintaining links with the local community and its food. And it's not every prison, where inmates are allowed to celebrate with a glass of wine!
