Summary |
A French aristocrat, a mechanic and a wealthy banker are all thrown together as prisoners of the Germans in World War I. They are separated by a succesful escape but then recaptured and reunited in a German aristocrat's fortress. The aristocratic jailer and prisoner begin a friendship that highlights a dying cultural and social elite. Jean Renoir's film is a meditation on class, the nature of war and the death of the old European order |
