This series investigates the extremes of dissatisfaction and discrimination by bringing together two people defined by the way they look, but who approach the beauty debate from very different sides. Can someone who lives with a facial disfigurement convince a self-confessed beauty addict that true beauty comes from within?Susan Campbell, 46, was diagnosed with a rare cancer in her jaw at the age of 4 months. She was too young to operate on, so she was initially given radiotherapy treatment to shrink the tumour. When she was four, surgeons finally removed the tumour and, in the process, she lost most of the left side of her face. Since then, she has had more than 60 reconstructive operations, endless skin grafts and even had one of her ribs removed so that it could be used to reconstruct her jaw. She now has a prosthetic eye and feels that she is happy with her looks. eight years ago she chose to stop having any more surgery.At 50 years old, Sarah Burge has made a career out of her looks and is often featured in newspapers and magazines as the 'Real Life Barbie' or 'Botox Barbie'. She has had over 500,000 pounds worth of cosmetic surgery, including two and a half face lifts, a bum tuck, botox and breast enlargements to name but a few. She also carries syringes of plumping filler with her in her handbag in case she feels she needs a quick fix |
