Summary This is the first and only concise and comprehensive history of Australia's part in the Boer War. It opens with an examination of the military spirit that was evident in the colonies in 1899, interweaving that with the other factors behind Australia's entry into the war - the influence of the press, loyalty to the Empire, nationalism, British proddings, opportunist statesmen, and inter-colonial rivalty. The story progresses from the wildly enthusiastic reaction of the public in the early months of the war, the malicious campaign aganist 'pro-Boers' and the temporary end to freedom of speech, as well as an account of the decline in public support for the war. The decisions to send further contingents are examined, and the work of all eight contingents in the field is described and appraised. A wide range of opinions is used in an attempt to define the qualities of the Australian soldier. The author looks at the performances of various Australian units relative to each other and to the total British effort. Apart from being an appraisal of the men in the field this study also provides a critical insight into the behaviour of the parliament, press, public and churches in a period that was far from being a glorious point in our history. -- Inside cover
