Summary "In the Department of Corrections, group work has been defined in general as meeting two standards or levels. The first, group counseling, is the subject-matter of this volume. The second, group psychotherapy, is carried out in close collaboration by psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and psychiatric social workers, the latter may now be designated as correctional classification officers. The group counseling program under the supervision of the aforementioned specialists, may be conducted by clerical workers, tradesmen, correctional classification officers, teachers and other employees. This book has been prepared to serve as a guide for members of the staff engaged in group counseling. It was developed for use first at the California State Prison at Folsom and at the Deuel Vocational Institution. Subsequently, it was revised on the basis of this early experience and with the advice of the employees in the institutions and camps who had studied it in connection with their work as group leaders. In group counseling as practiced in the California Department of Corrections, a conscious effort is made to harness that great fund of good will toward the inmates which is resident in the hearts of employees. The helpful attitudes of sincere correctional workers may through group counseling be channeled and guided for inmate welfare. This program is not bringing something new into the prisons other than the methods and procedures of group counseling. It is utilizing the age-old desire of human beings to help each other. These benevolent sentiments are found everywhere in human society and may be noted among employees even in the most backward of prisons"--Preface.
