But does it just mean the most toxic industries are being moved to sparsely populated rural areas? On Tuesday, Adrian Brown reports from two farming communities which have been labelled 'cancer villages'. Untreated industrial waste poisoning the water supply is being blamed for an increase in cancer cases, which are up to four times the global average. One couple have lost not only their 15-year-old son, but their entire livelihood, because their animals and land have been poisoned by a chromium dump. With over 500 similar areas identified across the country by campaigners, what is being done to stop the growth of China's pollution cancer?SWITZERLAND'S STOLEN GENERATIONThe story of Australia's Stolen Generation is sadly familiar, but Switzerland too has a shocking tale of children deemed to be at risk being forcibly removed from their homes in 'society's best interest'. Hundreds of thousands of Verdingkinder - or contract children - were taken by the government and exploited as cheap labour. They endured years of physical and mental abuse, and some even committed suicide. Other youngsters were locked up in 're-education' institutions for their perceived rebellious or promiscuous behaviour. In the most extreme cases, babies were taken away from their teenage mothers and some women were sterilised. Only some of Switzerland's Stolen Generation have received an official apology for abuse that continued into the 1980s, and now they're fighting too for compensation for their ruined lives. On Tuesday, David Brill has the very personal stories from a dark period in Switzerland's history, which is only now finding its voice to speak out.THE INSIDERTuesday's Dateline goes inside the secretive world of the CIA in an interview with former Intelligence Officer Glenn Carle. He spent 23 years working for the United States' intelligence service in four continents, primarily on the battle against terrorism. But Carle tells Aaron Lewis that September 11th 2001 changed that battle forever, turning the CIA into the puppet of a US administration that felt it was above the law. His candid views on rendition, detention and torture are the basis of his autobiography, The Interrogator, which was only published after heavy redaction by the CIA. Ahead of his appearance at the Sydney Writers' Festival, Carle opens up about what was really going on behind the razor wire of Guantanamo Bay and how 9/11 has changed the face of the United States forever |
