The 1960s are remembered as a time of great social and political change. This was also reflected to a large degree in what was happening on and off the cricket field. ABC producer, Lincoln Tyner has again teamed up with respected cricket writer and author Mike Coward to present another enthralling instalment in ABC TV's popular 'Cricket History Series'.The 1960s began with what has been regarded as the 'Greatest Test Series Ever Played', Australia v West Indies in 1960/61, then all the drama of the 1961 Tour of England with the 'Battle of the Ridge' and the dramatic final day at Old Trafford.The 2nd Test at Lord's in 1961 saw Neil Harvey captain Australia for the only time in the absence of an injured Richie Benaud. Harvey described newcomer Bill Lawry's maiden test century as one of the most courageous he had seen. Twenty-year-old Graham McKenzie bagged six wickets on debut. And Australia won the match!In the 4th Test at Old Trafford, a recovered Richie Benaud's inspired move to take the unprecedented step of bowling around the wicket (something a leg spinner just did not contemplate in those pre-Shane Warne days!), turned a certain English win into a remarkable Australian victory that secured those prized 'Ashes'! The 1960s saw the game's most contentious issue - illegal bowling actions - played out with the dramatic no balling of Ian Meckiff in the 1st Test against South Africa in Brisbane in December 1963. Umpire Colin Egar speaks publicly for the first time on the reasons behind his decision to make the fateful call.
