Summary Uummannaq, in the north-west of Greenland, is an isolated village, home to 2500 people and 5000 sled dogs. It's an island situated in the middle of a fjord. In winter, temperatures can go down to minus 40 degrees and the sea freezes. Uummannaq, then cut off from the rest of the world, has to be totally self-sufficient. Travelling is by sledge and taxi on the frozen sea. With the spring thaw comes a different life. Boats can once again sail up the coast to deliver vital commodities, and the bay is scattered with icebergs. It's a world apart, but for Ulan, the explorer who organises trips to the polar circle for problem youths, and for Apolo and Unartok the fishermen, or Jens the judge, it's home.
