Summary A revealing profile of the man who wants to be the next Prime Minister of Australia. He likes to ride his bike, he's not frightened to bare his body for the cameras, but what is Tony Abbott really like? And what sort of national leader would he make? Reporter Liz Jackson talks to the people who knew him at school, at university and key Liberal powerbrokers who championed him in his rise to power. "Tony's an authentic person and I think a lot of people see Tony as somebody who actually believes in something." On 1st December last year Tony Abbott won the Liberal party leadership by just one vote. In his acceptance speech he made it clear he was humbled and just a little surprised at his victory. Some doubted the wisdom of choosing him. Three months on the doubters are less vocal. The coalition is back in the Federal political race. The polls are up and Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has a fight on his hands. As one Liberal told Four Corners: "He has come out of the blocks, with great enthusiasm... our thinking has moved from holding on to the furniture at the next election, to build that, to we could win an election." The question is, can this man with a reputation for divisiveness translate the electorate's newfound interest in his leadership and policies into an election victory? His long history in Australian public life has delivered his party a leader who is unafraid of the spotlight or the need to make bold decisions. It's also true his strong views on a range of subjects including climate change, abortion, maternity leave and health care reform could provide ammunition for his political rivals. Whatever happens his supporters believe he's a politician who cannot be ignored. "Tony has altered the Australian political scene, there's no doubt about that. There's no disrespect to anybody else, but if you don't recognise that, you don't recognise anything about Australian politics."
