This case study describes the process of planning and implementing an observational study designed to analyze one aspect of children's language, use of mental state terms, in a naturalistic setting. We walk the reader through the steps involved in collecting and transcribing language data in a preschool setting and describe the analyses undertaken to address the question of how children's spontaneous language use reveals their early developing perspective-taking skills
