Summary Mixed methods refers to the combination of quantitative and qualitative methodologies in research. This ethnographic case study examines how qualitative rich data from participant observation and interviews can be used to contextualize and understand quantitative assessments of knowledge. Mixed methods allows ethnographers to compare qualitative and quantitative data sets in ways that often lead to innovative thinking about each data set: quantitative thinking is informed by the richness of qualitative insights, and qualitative insights can be better organized in relation to the order of quantitative thinking. Well-being in sports is a topic common to biomedical science, social science, and the humanities; therefore, a mixed-methods approach can be used to bridge insights from these various areas of study
