| Summary |
This 'boat movie' follows Stephen Vitiello, internationally celebrated 'sound artist' from the US, as he embarks on a 300km odyssey around the rugged Kimberley coast capturing unique sounds. Vitiello's latest challenge, to capture the sound of Australia, is at the behest of art patron John Kaldor and is to create an 'installation' to be exhibited in the old kilns at Sydney Park's brickworks buildings.In 1999, Vitiello was awarded a six month residency on the 91st floor of one of the towers of the ill fated World Trade Centre in New York, which he says, "was a pivotal experience, it truly changed me from being a musician to being a sound artist". Since then his work has been presented worldwide including at the Tate Modern London, and the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Kitchen, both in NYC. Inspired to record amazing Australian sounds Vitiello sets off with no experience of being in the outback. He puts his faith in his guide and skipper who is confident that the expedition will encounter birds, dolphins, whales and a wealth of other sounds. Vitiello soon discovers the danger of tides and crocs and the power of the wind. He bravely forges on and records under water sounds, such as waterfalls, billabongs and waves. At night he records the sound of the earth's crust moving, as he says "the song of the Earth".Back in Sydney, Vitiello cuts his sounds together and sets up the show in the kilns.
