Summary The use of multimodal methods in data collection can provide a holistic and in-depth understanding of a research question that extends beyond even the mixed-methods approaches of quantitative and qualitative combinations. A multimodal approach seeks communication methods outside of written text and may include such forms as pictures, videos, art pieces, theater performances, and the like. This type of research methodology can be especially suitable in sport, exercise, and performance psychology domains where the performance environment can be dynamic and unpredictable for data collection processes, thus making some traditional research questions difficult to fully and authentically explore. The purpose of this case study is to detail the use of video data collected during a multimodal research study that examined the psychological experience of runners during concurrent 100-mile and 100-km ultramarathon trail races in eastern Massachusetts spanning 32 hr of data collection. Runners documented their psychological states through quantitative in-task data, two different post-race qualitative interviews, and by answering research questions in front of a video camera at two different aid stations along the 25-mile loop course. These videos were used during the delayed post-race interview as a memory prompt for the runners to encourage deeper reflection on their psychological experience and provide a means for triangulation of data. The advantages and drawbacks for using this type of multimodal approach are identified within the case study and avenues for future research offered for budding psychology researchers
