Summary This qualitative dataset is designed for teaching thematic analysis of reflective journal narratives by social work students on HIV/AIDS in the Southern United States from health disparities and social justice perspectives. Data are provided by Drs. Nikki R. Wooten, Nicole M. Cavanagh, and Llewellyn J. Cornelius from the University of South Carolina and University of Georgia, respectively. The dataset includes de-identified narratives from an instructor-guided reflective journaling assignment for a Bachelor of Social Work field seminar class after students' attendance at an HIV/AIDS Community Stakeholder Town Hall panel presentation. The exemplar focuses on how written narratives on students' experiences and perceptions of the town hall are qualitatively analysed using thematic analysis. The dataset files are accompanied by a Teaching Guide and a Student Guide
