Summary Preface: Asthma is a chronic disease that affects adults and children. Asthma impacts health systems, health providers, and individual health, clinically and economically. The burden of asthma remains a significant public health concern nationally and globally. In a 2012 report, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that the number of persons with asthma has risen steadily over the past decade from 20.3 to 25.7 million in the United Sates. In 2007, the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute published the most recent Expert Panel Report 3: Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma that provides a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis and management of asthma. Despite the availability of published asthma guidelines for over 2 decades, widespread adherence to guideline-recommended care remains a goal yet to be achieved. This issue of Nursing Clinics of North America provides a broad range of asthma-related topics including the state of asthma in the United States, overview of guideline-recommended asthmas care, selected developments in asthma research, asthmas management in various settings, and an innovative state-level asthma program
