Summary The J.R. Carroll collection is a manuscript collection of material relating to the life and research of John Raymond Carroll (1905-1995). J. Ray Carroll trained and worked as a teacher, teaching at various Victorian schools including Sale, Eltham, Seymour and Dandenong. He taught maths and science, and retired in 1968. The collection contains two boxes of material relating to his teaching career. After retirement, Carroll became interested in Victorian history and began to research and write in this area. The collection contains nine boxes relating to the research he conducted for his book “Harpoons to Harvest: the story of Charles and John Mills, Pioneers of Port Fairy” Warrnambool Institute Press, 1989. It contains research relating to the Mills brothers and the early history of Port Fairy, and also includes correspondence with other researchers and critiques of other works relating to Port Fairy. J. Ray Carroll married Daisy Mulgrew (1904-1969), also a teacher, and the collection contains two boxes of items relating to her teaching career. She taught domestic arts and other subjects, and worked at Colac and Elliminyt. There are notes from her training, as well as lesson notes and plans and a number of commercially produced cook books
