Summary |
"Where would you label the appearance of the transition and secondary theme in the sonata-form exposition cited in Ex. 1.1? This seems like a simple enough question, of the type that might appear on a standard exam for a freshman music theory class. Yet the answer is far from straightforward, for there appear to be at least two viable possibilities. To be sure, you could probably locate a transition and secondary theme here without much trouble and provide excellent reasons for your choice, along with reasons why any alternate choice would be less satisfactory. But as a thought experiment, could you also think of plausible reasons why someone might choose to label the themes here differently than you do?"-- Provided by publisher |
