Summary |
Presents the history of homosexuality in Australia, traced back to the 19th century, and throughout the different stages of the fight for acceptance, legally and socially in the 20th century, to its present standing in the Australian community. Today, gays and lesbians live more a life of celebration than shame. Information sources, covering the early days, include government and newspaper reports, which show people arrested in situations which could now be termed homosexual. Archival records and research also show that there were certain such ongoing activity, as in cases of affectionate, loving relationships between convicts, both homosexuals and lesbians. Hidden away were also many cases of working class men and women living a homosexual life together; as well as, instances of prominent public figures engaged in homosexual activity. Much of the homosexual and lesbian practices which could have occurred in the Penal Colony, could just be situational, happening whenever and wherever people were forced together. Raises the issues of discrimination against homosexuals legally, socially and in employment, throughout the period discussed. Includes selected archival footage and contributions from historians and participants in the film |
