Summary "There have been many ruthless dictators in the last century, who have killed millions in their quest for power, but few have managed to inflict such enormous damage on one small country. During Pol Pot's four-year reign of Cambodia he exterminated nearly a third of his own people. Between one and three million Cambodians died during the three years, eight months and 20 days of Pol Pot's rule." - BBC Worldwide Thirty years after Cambodia suffered under Pol Pot's despotic regime; Pol Pot: Behind The Killing Fields will reveal the chilling story of the genocide of more than two million Cambodians that occurred between 1975 and 1978. Cambodia was closed to the world and no true record was filmed of Pol Pot's new society. But drawing on his words, the testimony of those who knew him well and survivor accounts, Pol Pot: Behind The Killing Fields is the story of his journey to the killing fields. In March 1974 the Khmer Rouge took over the old capital Odongk, 20,000 people were forced to move into the countryside and teachers and public servants were executed. A year later, Phnom Pen fell and within days the city's population of over two million was marched into the countryside at gunpoint. The Khmer Rouge and their infamous leader, Pol Pot, had taken power. "Year Zero" had begun. Interviews with Party leaders, Khmer Rouge commanders, and Phnom Pen residents reveal what life was like under the regime. Money, private property, education and religion were abolished and Cambodia's towns and cities were emptied as the population was forced into massive, unworkable agricultural collectives. The Khmer rouge systematically destroyed all symbols that represented the modern and civilised world. The Khmer Rouge used hunger and terror to control every aspect of the population's lives and opponents of the ultimate aim of restoring Cambodia's greatness were deemed enemies of the state and dealt with accordingly. With exclusive interviews with the highest ranking Khmer Rouge officers, and eyewitness accounts this is a journey back to the world of Pol Pot, the man behind the killing fields. (From the UK, in Khmer, French and English, with English subtitles)
