Summary "The purpose of this book is to present the sociology of the normal child. The social processes are drawn from child life rather than from adult society. Although recognizing that there is no sharp line of demarcation between childhood and adult life, it is the author's firm conviction that a careful analysis of these processes during the early years is basic to our understanding of much of the behavior of adolescent and adult life. If we can unravel the threads of social organization in childhood, we shall formulate, at least in broad outline, a basis for social control. The major portion of this volume is devoted to an analysis of the application of these social processes in the typical social interaction of the life of the child. The specific situations presented will include the family, the play group, the school, noncommercial and commercial recreation, the state, and the church. It is the earnest hope of the author that this analysis, which brings together the scattered literature in the field and frankly faces the realties of child life, will make a distinct contribution. Although written primarily as a textbook for courses in educational sociology, it should also be of genuine help to parents, social and religious workers, and all others interested in the wholesome social adjustment of childhood to the complex environment of modern life"--Preface.
