"This book has been written to help the mental health professional identify relevant issues that allow reasonable office automation decision making. It is not intended as a thorough introduction to computer technology. Reading this book will not make you a computer expert. Rather, the goal of the first section of this book is to provide some background information so that you can make informed decisions about which office operations are most likely to benefit from automation and what might be the appropriate types of hardware and software to purchase. This book also focuses on personnel, support, and implementation planning issues. We try to identify specific questions that may not emerge in discussions with vendors unless you raise them--questions that should be answered before making financial commitments. In addition, the book should be seen as a resource volume to which the reader can refer to obtain information about specific commercially available software that purports to handle office functions of interest to the mental health professional. The second section of this volume provides descriptions and comparisons of 112 computer programs that address the special needs of the mental health professional in private practice."
