Series Stories My Country Told Me ; 4
Summary In today's shrinking world the differences between one place and another appear to be rapidly diminishing yet never have so many peoples struggled to establish their own separate nation states. Resulting tensions have often become bloody and horrifying. What is the future of the nation-state in a world of multi-nationals and global communications? In this series, questions concerning identity and belonging are addressed by four world-famous writers and thinkers: Eric Hobsbawm, Desmond Tutu, Eqbal Ahmad and Maxine Hong Kingston.Professor Eqbal Ahmad was one of the world's leading authorities on nationalism and colonialism. At 13 he joined hundreds of Muslim refugees and travelled the 900 miles - 300 of them on foot - along the Great Trunk Road from his village in India to the new state of Pakistan, then known as the land of peace. Some 50 years later, he made the journey again, travelling from Calcutta to Lahore. What happened to the dreams that formed the foundation of new nations such as India and Pakistan? Eqbal Ahmad died in 1999
