Summary |
Terms of reference: Discipline research strategy for Australian astronomy 1994. The seven terms of reference of the review of Australian astronomy 1994 are: 1. To report on current Australian activity in astronomy with reference to: existing facilities; existing funding; distribution of astronomers and postgraduate students; the role of astronomy in science education (school, tertiary and public); the relation of astronomy to other physical sciences; and, the impact of an astronomical education on manpower in other fields in Australia. 2. To examine the quality of Australian astronomical research, particularly in terms of international ranking, through comments from international referees, publications (including citation impact), hosting of international conferences, the number of International Astronomical Union (IAU) members, members of IAU Commissions in executive positions, visiting scientists and competitive time gained by Australian astronomers on international facilities. 3. To examine potential developments in astronomical techniques and facilities worldwide, to consider their impact on Australian astronomy over the decade 1995-2005, and to define the discipline's needs in regard to access to such facilites. 4. To suggest a strategy for the development of the discipline and, in light of this, to suggest priorities to the Australian Government for funding in astronomy over the same period. 5. To comment on the possible role of astronomy in an Australian space program. 6. To examine the benefits to Australia's industrial base by participation in construction and operation of major astronomical facilites and instrumentation. 7. To consider how Australia can be most effectively involved in astronomy in an international context, both in collaboration on research facilites, and in scientific coordination as arranged, for example, by the IAU.and genetic indica |
