| Summary |
"This study looked at young Australians' knowledge, attitudes and experience relating to mental health issues and services. It was not a broad-based review of youth mental health issues or services, but work specifically designed to explore young people's own perspectives. The main elements of the research, carried out between mid 1996 and early 1997, were as follows: *focus group discussions with young people from the general community, held in nine country and city locations in five States; *one-to-one or small group discussions (in five States and the Northern Territory) with approximately 100 young people who could be described as 'at-risk' or marginalised in some way, including young people with a diagnosed mental illness, young people who had attempted suicide, youth living in isolated areas, young Indigenous Australians, young offenders, homeless young people and gay and lesbian young people. *a face-to-face sample survey, across Australia, of 1,200 people aged between 14 and 24."--page i |
