Summary In keeping with the 2011 NAIDOC week themes of celebrating achievements of Indigenous peoples and taking control of change and the future, SBS presents a powerful documentary about one man's journey to change his life and regain his health. From Sydney's La Perouse, Rodney weighs 185kg and is about to undergo revolutionary lap band surgery. Doctors feel it is necessary for him to lose at least 85kg in order to prevent a stroke or heart attack in the next couple of years. After the surgery, Rodney is filled with a renewed sense of ambition. He loses 50kg but he does not become complacent, and trains hard to try to lose at least another 20kg. He is spurred on by a number of things; he has bought new clothes in a 'regular' menswear shop and feels like he is starting to look attractive. His diabetes has disappeared.Rodney is finally fit and able to undertake the full range of tasks at his work, and for the first time ever, he is training for the annual City to Surf. Big Fella follows Rodney as he radically transforms his life in one year and becomes a role model both to his family and his children and to his community. (Commissioned by SBS) (Documentary) M CC
