Summary "This work investigates the incorporation of the festive practices of a colonial carnival on the shores of the Caribbean into the Republican commemoration of the absolute independence of Cartagena de Indias from the Spanish Crown on November 11, 1811. The book focuses on migratory cultural routes and festive trajectories that made possible the appearance and transformation of carnivals in Cartagena de Indias and the Colombian Caribbean as a result of the interaction of the populations of three continents. The book argues that carnival was not only a driving force that configured a cultural region in the Colombian Caribbean through circulation, but it was also a fundamental part of the national construction process as it got incorporated into the Republic with its festive practices."--Abstract
