Summary |
Fearless UK comic Meera Syal is curious to know where her rebellious streak comes from. She says she is obsessed by her ancestry and, as part of a "transplanted generation", craves a sense of place. Born in Britain, Meera's parents came from the Punjab in India and settled in Walsall. Her parents came from different religious backgrounds - her father is Hindu and her mother a Sikh. Travelling to her parents' homeland, Meera discovers a grandfather who was a rebellious communist journalist, and one who was given a Freedom Fighters award for his part in the struggle for Indian Independence from the British. Visiting the remote village where her ancestors lived, Syal emotionally retrieves a stone from the ruined family home - now a cowshed. (From the UK, in English) (Documentary Series) |
