1. San Marino, a small sovereign enclave in Italy of about 30,000 people, was impacted later than other countries in the region by the global financial crisis. Growth remained positive until a sharp contraction in the last quarter of 2008 ( -6.8 percent Q/Q, and -1.1 percent for the whole of 2008; Appendix Table 1). The outlook worsened in 2009, with projected growth down to -5 percent. The unemployment rate is expected to reach 5.1 percent in 2009.
