| Summary |
A two-part documentary series that explores the story of Pemulwuy - a traditional Bidgigal warrior who led a 12 year guerrilla war of payback against the soldiers and settlers of the British colony at Sydney Cove who stole land, food resources, and kidnapped and killed Bidgigal women. This documentary brings Pemulwuy to life, describing his bravery and determination as he wandered the new settlements taking revenge for the wrongs inflicted on the Aboriginal people. Until now, he has never been acknowledged, let alone celebrated in Australian colonial history. Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal experts: Jim Kohen - Dharug historian; Prof. Eric Wilmott - historian and author of Pemulwuy The Rainbow Warrior; Richard Green - Dharug descendant, history and language teacher; Leanne Tobin - Dharug descendant and playwright; Launa Munroe - student and human rights activist, all discuss Pemulwuy's part in the history of early European settlement, and why we know so little about it. They pose important questions about this country's dual history, including the controversy around the introduction of diseases by the first settlers - was it simply an accidental consequence of first contact, or was it a deliberate attempt at germ warfare? Next week in part two we explore how the Pemulwuy story has been left out of Australia's history, and what happened to his remains.
