SAGE Business Cases
Summary This case involves a four-layered story blended like a marble cake within the same employee recruitment process. At one layer, a job candidate is intent on carrying a gallon of gasoline onto an airplane. In the next layer, a manager balances diversity and merit in building a short-list of most-qualified job applicants. Unfortunately, this short-list includes the guy with the gasoline, and that is where the third layer comes into play--damage control. Mixed throughout the case is the fourth layer: a concern about the interaction between individuals and a workplace incident. While a true story, fictional names are used and the fictional setting is the English department at the University of South Amherst. While this case may seem outrageous, it applies to what you may someday (if not already) experience. Workplace incidents, sometimes steeped in stupidity, but quite often wrapped in thin layers of carelessness, may appear in your own work organization and have devastating consequences. So watch out!
