Series SAGE business cases
Summary Mark, the CEO of the manufacturing company WinMech, is faced with the resignation of two of his most promising recruits, Robin and Steve. Robin was recently promoted to a new role within the company (an example of upward movement) and Steve recently joined the organization from outside (an example of external recruitment). The case displays their problem-solving attitude and zeal for process improvements through various events, and describes how they each had struggled to balance their expectations of their new role against the expectations of the role in reality. When Mark reviews the notes of the exit interviews that he conducted, he realizes there are many areas of concern in the recruitment and socialization process. Mark meets with his head of HR to discuss the situation leading to the resignations, but she has a different perspective on them. This case encourages students to put themselves into the shoes of the CEO and evaluate areas such as realistic job preview, newcomer socialization process, person-job and person-organization fit, along with the role of a manager in the socialization process. The case highlights reality shock, pushback, and encounters faced by newcomers while beginning to work in their new roles
