Summary Colombia is at a critical moment in the interplay between security and economic dynamics and government policies, with a nontrivial possibility that things could turn out unexpectedly well, but an arguably much greater probability that they will not. While continuing to constructive engage and offer the Petro administration all possible support where U.S. and Colombian interests coincide, the United States should not hesitate to respectfully express its concerns if it perceives that the Petro administration is venturing down a dangerous or self-destructive path. Interested stakeholders in Colombia, the United States, and elsewhere should continue to engage with a mixture of hope and vigilance in case foundations for that hope evaporate
