Series Who Do You Think You Are? ; Series 5, Episode 8
Summary Actor John Howard sees his recent move back to a rural life as a reconnection with his childhood memories of visits to the farms of both his grandfathers. While he was very close to his maternal grandfather, his paternal grandfather, Cecil Howard, was somewhat of an enigma.John wants to learn more about Cecil and heads back to his old farm for the first time in over 30 years. There he meets up with his Aunt Nancy, who knew Cecil well. John learns that Cecil married just a few weeks before enlisting for World War One.The family knows little of Cecil's experiences through the war, apart from a dubious story he told about seeing the famous German flying ace, the Red Baron, being shot down. John follows Cecil's trail through the horrors of the Great War, finding a very promising military career ruined by a single regrettable act.John then turns his attention to the maternal side of his family, and finds a kindred spirit in his great-great- grandfather, John Crane Nottage, an ancestor who fought for social justice for the poor, whilst he battled his own demons of alcoholism and business failure.
