Summary |
Cognitive reserve has emerged as a powerful concept for interpreting individual differences in susceptibility to, and recovery from, brain injury or pathology. Underlying cognitive reserve is the idea that the brain actively attempts to cope with brain insult or pathology by either using pre-existing cognitive processing approaches, or enlisting compensatory approaches. Individual differences in the ability to use these approaches allow some people to cope with pathology more successfully than others |

Cognitive Reserve: Theory and Applications provides a comprehensive review of the theory, research, and clinical application of the concept of cognitive reserve, and describes in depth the source of individual differences. The various chapters explore the theoretical underpinnings of cognitive reserve, and evidence for its existence. Possible genetic, physiologic, and neural underpinnings of cognitive reserve are presented. Approaches for studying this concept are addressed, including epidemiologic, cognitive experimental, and neuroimaging. A wide range of applications of the concept of cognitive reserve is discussed, including child development, aging, Alzheimer's disease, HIV, and head injury. This volume offers an up-to-date, global treatment of cognitive reserve that will be essential reading both for those new to the concept and experienced investigators |
