Summary Delphi method, a qualitative research approach, promotes generating knowledge through the funneling participant input into a common consensus. We were curious about what training experiences were especially helpful in preparing doctoral students to perform their roles and duties as new counselor educators in higher education institutions. A Delphi method was appropriate because we wanted to glean information without invoking pre-determined assumptions about whether and what additional training components were preferred. To arrive at accurate consensus through the Delphi method requires two conditions: (1) selecting participants for their expertise in the area of knowledge investigated and (2) determining a method to generate the first round of data that can be then utilized to generate further rounds of data. To satisfy the first condition, we chose recent doctoral graduates from counselor education programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counselor and Related Educational Programs who had secured counselor education positions. We decided that these new counselor educators would have the best access to recent training experiences, as well as have opinions on what training experiences were helpful in their new role as educators. To fulfill the second condition, we posed two broad prompts, one on learning experiences from doctoral training most valued as new faculty and another on learning experiences they wished they had received during the doctoral training process. This case study provides sample selection, the methods used to generate subsequent surveys, the common problems encountered, and suggestions to mitigate such challenges when using Delphi method
