Summary The guide addresses the issues of how bias and stereotyping in language, content, visual images and assessment can devalue and demean groups of people such as women and girls, ethnic groups, Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, the disabled, the gifted and talented, students from non-urban areas, and from low socioeconomic circumstances. The nature and quality of educational resources can determine the degree of participation by students and the wider community in the educational process. Resources can: enhance students' world views by extending or limiting the views that students develop; play an important role in the development of self concept; and transmit important messages to students about themselves. A Fair Deal comprises the following sections: Equity and resources; General principles; Key criteria; Appreciating and affirming diversity: knowledge, language, visual images, learning media, evaluation and assessment; Avoiding stereotyping: assumptions about groups, the deficit approach, the paternalistic approach, the tokenistic approach, the romantic/exotic approach, inappropriate humour, insensitive use of language
